Call for Entries: Monroe Moments Photo Contest

The Monroe Art Guild with support from our sponsor, Walton Regional Medical Center, is pleased to reach out to our members to request submissions for your digital photographic interpretations of our hometown – those Monroe Moments – that most remind you of the sights, landmarks, seasons and great times to be found in our little corner of Georgia.

The primary purpose of the contest is to showcase the photographic talents of our members and in doing so, we hope to inspire participants, residents and visitors to see Monroe with new eyes.

We will award twelve winners with a check for $100 presented by Gary Lang, CEO of Walton Regional Medical Center and Steve Brown, president of the Monroe Art Guild Board of Directors. Award-winning photographic images and the names of each award-winning photographer will be featured in Monroe Art Guild promotional and fundraising materials to potentially include postcards and note cards and/or featured within the Downtown Development Authority 2009 Monroe Community Calendar.

The contest is open for submissions beginning June 1, 2008 and ending on August 1, 2008. The entry fee is $10.00 per submission. You may submit up to three entries and you must register at the Monroe Art Guild by June 30, 2008 to be eligible.

Idea Starters

The following categories are intended to help inspire subjects. They are idea starters only. Imagination should have full reign, but remember that the images should be those that you would imagine appearing on a post card, note card or calendar of Monroe:

Cityscapes – parks, streets, neighborhoods
Events – festivals, parades, concerts, holidays, fairs, sporting events, meetings
Buildings – churches, government buildings, storefronts of interest
Landmarks – historic markers or structures of scenic/historic interest
Agricultural – fields, barns, equipment, livestock
Outdoors – gardens, wildlife, forests, streams, lakes, sunrise/sunset, seasons
Families – family fun and outings that illustrate something about Monroe
Hobbies – hunting, fishing, golfing, quilting, antiquing, grilling, gardening, collecting
Community – scenes that depict residents involved in bettering our community
Arts – scenes that capture the music, theater and the visual arts of Monroe

Note: All photos to be considered for the Downtown Development Authority 2009 Monroe Community Calendar must be recognizable as having been taken in downtown Monroe. If there isn’t something in the photo that identifies it with downtown Monroe, it will not be considered for the calendar, but will still be eligible for the Monroe Moments Photo Contest.

Rules

1. Eligibility

All current members (including student members) of the Monroe Art Guild who register for the contest by June 30 are eligible. Those who are not members and would like to enter the contest may join upon registration.

2. Registration

All entrants must register for the contest at the Monroe Art Guild by June 30, 2008.

3. Assignation of Rights

All entrants will be required to sign a release that assigns the Monroe Art Guild (MAG) the right to use each image in MAG promotional materials, communications and fund raising efforts.

The release also assigns the Downtown Development Authority the rights to use the entered photos, if selected, in the 2009 Monroe Community Calendar.

This release will not impede the photographer from using or selling the same photo in other situations, such as the exhibition or sale of prints.

The original rights to the photographic image belong to the photographer and he/she is only granting specific rights to MAG and the DDA for particular use.

4. Duration of Contest

The contest will be open for submission from June 1, 2008 and close on August 1, 2008. After that time, all entries will be blind judged and a presentation of award checks will be made at an event to be held at the Monroe Art Guild on or about August 15,

5. Submission of Photos

* All image submissions must be made on or before August 1, 2008.

* Up to three (3) photos may be submitted by any one photographer. There will be a $10 charge for each submission.

* Each photo submission MUST be supplied in digital format as a high quality, large format .JPG file. The size of your photo should be at least 1024 x 685 pixels. The photo’s title should match the name of the image file.

* Photo files may be sent via email to: monroemoments@gmail.com, by mail or delivered in-person to the Monroe Art Guild in the form of a photo CD or other digital storage media. Include your name and the title of the photograph in your submission. If submitting via email, submit one image attachment per email.

* Submission by email acknowledges on the part of the photographer that rights have been assigned to the Monroe Art Guild and the Downtown Development Authority for use of the photo/photos as described above.

* It is the sole responsibility of the photographer to check with the Monroe Art Guild to ensure that photos sent by email or delivered on digital storage media were received in good condition.

* For those photographers who would like their photo/photos displayed in public during the month of August, they may provide an 8 X 10 image either dry mounted or glued to foamcore (a poster board-type product readily available at most office supply stores) to help ensure a uniform presentation of images.

6. Judging

So that there will be no possibility of partiality, the judging will be blind, with photo titles only and no names associated with the entered photos.

7. Award of Prizes

Monroe Art Guild and Walton Regional Medical Center will award each of twelve winners with a check for $100 presented by Gary Lang, CEO of WRMC and Steve Brown, president of the Monroe Art Guild. The ceremony will be held at the Monroe Art Guild with print and video media present.

The name of the photographer and that of the Monroe Art Guild will appear on every image of the photo used by MAG and on the DDA 2009 Monroe Community Calendar.

8. Display of Photos

The Monroe Art Guild will display all photographic prints submitted in prescribed 8 X 10 inch format and mounted on foamcore ready-to-hang in its gallery on Broad Street and possibly in other buildings around town for the month of August. August 1 is the deadline for submission of mounted photos. They must be delivered to Monroe Art Guild at 205 South Broad Street, Monroe, Georgia 30655.

Selection of Photos for Monroe 2009 Community Calendar

The Downtown Development Authority will select photos for use for the upcoming 2009 calendar from all entered photos in the contest. Selection is to occur by early September.

About the Judge

The judge (chosen from outside Monroe, the membership of the Monroe Art Guild and Walton County) is Dr. W. Robert Nix, Professor of Art Emeritus, Art Education/Photography of the University of Georgia.

Dr. Nix was born in North Vernon, Indiana in 1934; however, he grew up and was educated in Georgia. He attended West Georgia College and then the University of Georgia where he earned his B.S. Ed. in Art Education, M.A. Ed. Masters in Art Education, Ed. S. Specialist in Art Education, and Ed. D. Doctorate in Art Education.

Dr. Nix is a photographer, a photographic collector, a photographic historian, an exhibition curator, and an authority on the "Bromoil" photographic process. His photographs have been widely exhibited, and both his photographs and research has been published in a number of art, art education and photography books and journals, both regionally and nationally, as well as in Europe and China.

Yet, while very active as an artist, Dr. Nix sees himself and his role as primarily an educator. Collectively, he has forty-six years teaching experience with extensive involvement in the public schools, including elementary, junior high, high school and supervisory positions. At the University of Georgia he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Art Education and Photography and directed masters and doctoral students' research. Furthermore, Dr. Nix is a recipient of both the Sandy Beaver Teaching Professorship Award and the Meigs Award for Excellence in Teaching, and has been recognized for his outstanding professional contributions by the National Art Education Association.

We look forward to seeing your view of Monroe!
