May Events!

The Monroe Art Guild is full of events during the month of May. Check out these wonderful happenings after reading a few fun facts about May and the Monroe Art Guild building!

May is National Preservation Month
The Monroe Art Guild is proud to promote "National Preservation Month" in May with two exhibits and a guest speaker looking at and appreciating our past, our culture, and the built environment. Artist Rene Shoemaker, teacher John Lucas, and Nowell Briscoe enable us to see familiar places in a new and interesting way! The theme for this year's celebration of "National Preservation Month" is "Old is the New Green." Some also say the "greenest house is the one already built." You can learn more about "National Preservation Month" through the National Trust for Historic Preservation link: http://www.preservationnation.org/take-action/preservation-month/

Did you know Walton County has 27 National Register of Historic Places listed sites, and of those places Monroe has 19? The other 8 listed places are found in Between, Campton, Good Hope, Jersey, Social Circle, and Walnut Grove.
Did you also know the Monroe Art Guild is located within a former U.S. Post Office? The Post Office was built in the same year (1931), by the same Acting Supervising Architect (James A. Wetmore), under the same U.S. Treasury Depart Head (A. W. Mellon a.k.a. Andrew William Mellon) as the Madison, Georgia Post Office.

James A. Wetmore oversaw the construction of over 2,000 federal buildings, including the Alaska State Capitol, the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse which is today a museum and cultural center. You can read a Times Magazine article from December 10, 1934 about James A. Wetmore with this link: TIMES

Andrew Mellon was a banker, philanthropist, industrialist, as well as an art collector. Andrew Mellon and fellowe philanthropist Andrew Carnegie each would later have their separate technology and research schools merge in 1967 to create Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Rene Shoemaker (Main Gallery)

Athens artist Rene Shoemaker will be presenting "Discovering Monroe" as the Main Gallery Show from May 4 - 27. The show is sponsored by Larry and Shirley Johnson. The Opening Reception is Saturday, May 8 from 4 - 6pm. Rene Shoemaker was our Art Talk guest speaker last summer and presented us with a silk painting featuring the Monroe Art Guild. "Discovering Monroe" looks at the city of Monroe through the use of painted silk art . The vibrant colors and subjects will give anyone a renewed appreciation for the architectural details and streetscapes of this textile city.

Jackie Delker (Members' Gallery)

The featured artist in the Members' Gallery is Jackie Delker. Her work has been found in various Monroe Art Guild shows in recent years. She was the featured artist of the Tour of Homes brochure in 2008, and most recently has been working on painted faces using vintage hats and costume jewelry, like the one currently found in our Gift Shop.

John Lucas (History Class Projects)

John Lucas, a history teacher at George Walton Academy, has on display scaled architectural studies of buildings from his 8th Grade History Class. Through the understanding of material and construction, the students learn more about early construction techniques and architectural styles.

Nowell Briscoe (Art Talk)

Monroe native Nowell Briscoe will be our first guest speaker kicking off our six-part Art Talk series for 2010. His presentation is titled, "The Final Writes: Recalling the Dead Through Obituaries." The Art Talk is sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Charles Henson, Jr. The presentation will begin at 6:30pm and will be followed by a reception catered by Elaine Jones with flowers provided by The Garden Gate Florist.
