An Artful Evening For Downtown

“It’s a celebration of the visual arts, music and the charms of downtown Monroe,” says Lori Brewer in describing this year’s Monroe Art Guild “Art Walk”, happening this Friday, April 25 from 5 – 8 pm.

Sixteen area artists have contributed their work to the event, while seventeen downtown merchants will display the art in their businesses. Many of the artists are Walton County area favorites, with some newcomers participating this year. Also new is the chalk drawing area on the Courthouse sidewalk, open to kids and adults who would like to share their vision on cement. There may even be a portrait artist working the street.

Says Brewer, MAG chairperson, “This year we have a wider variety of entertainment and artwork, including some amazing pieces of gourd art, photography and sculpture.”

According to Brewer, the merchant participation has grown a bit this year with at least one building located beyond Broad on Spring Street. “Shapes Yoga at 116 West Spring Street will be hosting sculpture and paintings by several artists,” says Brewer.

Musical groups are more diverse as well, with the Hog Mountain Boys bluegrass band adding a festive flair. Monroe high schoolers Cody Hutchings and Lucas Jones will each have groups playing, performing respectively on blues guitar and trumpets. Returning groups include guitarists Jack and Jim from Conyers and a local duo Spread. Michelle Thrasher and her group will play the same eclectic mix they performed last year on drums and guitars. Jonathon Croft will play contemporary acoustical pop and Jenny Howard will share her music for kids.
