Sept-Oct 07 Exhibit: The Georgia Gourd Society
Visit the Art Guild to view creative works from The Georgia Gourd Society of artists. Sculpture pieces are made from gourds and gourd pieces representing a variety of forms and shapes... from musical instruments you can touch and play, to intricately carved and painted bowls, to fun figurative shapes. The gourd sculpture above was created by Hudi Studios in Atlanta.
The gourd sculpture below "Great Blue Heron" was created by a husband and wife team from Stone Mountain, Tom and Karen Cassara. Tom and Karen started creating award-winning gourd art in 2002, after retiring from their own business.
How do they work together? Tom and Karen scour the gourd farms and shows for the shapes and sizes they need. Karen selects the gourds to be used for a specific sculpture and draws the design to make th wings, tails and turtle shells. Tom helps with the cutting, construction and gluing. Karen will then add features using air-dried clay and acrylic paint. Tom and Karen specialize in gourd sculpture in the form of animals, birds, fish and reptiles.
To learn how to find, grow, harvest, clean and paint your own gourds, visit the Georgia Gourd Society.
Join us for the show reception at the Guild on September 23 at 2:00pm.
